GPT-4: Smarter and Faster with Human-Level Language Skills
The next generation AI language model promises to be smarter and faster with human-like language skills. Its potential for revolutionizing AI is immense, raising expectations for new breakthroughs.
If you thought GPT-3 was impressive, wait until you see what GPT-4 can do. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has just announced its latest breakthrough in deep learning: a large multimodal model that can accept both text and image inputs and emit text outputs.
GPT-4 is not just a bigger and faster version of GPT-3. It is also smarter and more versatile. It can handle complex tasks that require reasoning, creativity, and general knowledge. For example, it can pass a simulated bar exam with a score around the top 10% of test takers; write a short story based on a user's prompt; or answer tax-related questions based on an uploaded image of a form.
OpenAI says that GPT-4 exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks, while acknowledging that it still has limitations such as social biases and "hallucinations" that it knows more than it really does.
The company also says that it has spent six months aligning GPT-4 using lessons from its adversarial testing program and ChatGPT, resulting in its best-ever results on factuality, steerability, and refusing to go outside of guardrails.
GPT-4 is powered by a new supercomputer co-designed by OpenAI and Azure that can process massive amounts of data at unprecedented speed. The model has been trained on over 1 trillion words from the internet, including text and images from various domains.
OpenAI is releasing GPT-4's text input capability via ChatGPT Plus and the API (with a waitlist). To prepare the image input capability for wider availability, the company is collaborating closely with a single partner to start. OpenAI is also open-sourcing OpenAI Evals, its framework for automated evaluation of AI model performance.
GPT-4 is a remarkable achievement that showcases the potential of artificial intelligence to solve difficult problems and enhance human capabilities. It also raises important questions about the ethical and social implications of such powerful technology.
